I am the Purple! (Part 2)

Part 2 in our excursion into the Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence! Things got really messed up in terms of what little preparation I had made because of one key mistake I had made in setting up an item, and this also resulted in a plot hooks being skipped so fun times ahoy! The drawn pictures are by the talented +Kathryn Jenkins

Before we started the session I queried the players as to whether they had developed any long term goals for their characters (during the pre-session consumption of cake). Aside from Lost searching for his fiancée Favian and Karys searching for a new suitable body, the general vibe was that of "Nah, we're just along for the ride!". We quickly levelled up the characters and jumped back into the action; due to the fast flow of the game, and the hope to see a climatic battle between legendary heroes and mighty villains by the last session, we had opted to level up at the beginning of each session.

Rather than try recounting the session blow-by-blow, I'm going to instead try and do highlights. I'm aware the last session report was a bit lengthy (not to mention how long it took to write up!) so here we go...

Summon

The previous session had ended with Karys summoning a monster. Earlier in the day +Kathryn Jenkins and I met up to roll this due to how time consuming it was, but certain rolls were failed sadly, resulting in an insanely overpowered giant frog appearing in the throne room with the characters. The guards failed their morale check (somewhat unsurprisingly) and pegged it, leaving the queen to grab her special looking tiara and start gibbering as the sorcerer fired off a volley of magic missiles at the frog.

Lyrica sprung into action and levied a burst of Dispel Magic at the queen, interrupting her attempt to do 'something', while Lost stole the sorcerer's monocle. In an attempt to right her wrong, Karys decided to try out our new spell "Festival"; this resulted in the frog being teleported to Italy circa 1817 during a Marti Gras festival. I am totally working that into a future story somehow.

Lost becomes the Purple Putrescence

It transpired that the queen's tiara gave her control over the thing that rots from the sky. Wearing the tiara prompted a Save Vs Paralyse roll; failure caused the victim to become dazed for d8 turns, with success causing the character to see through the 'eyes' of the purple putrescence and have control over it. The flaw in my design however was not including some kind of negative consequence for using the item, causing Lost to decide to fly the party to the southern island of Kravian where he believed his fiancée was.

When they led Lost's dazed form outside to where the Purple had recently been massacring the Worshippers, they discovered that the Putrescence seemed to be nothing more than an airship of sorts that was projecting this mass of cloud around itself. They couldn't find a way inside however, so Lost tried to "think" of letting them in, causing tentacles to reach out and snatch the characters up, depositing them inside cells within the Putrescence itself. The other cells were filled with wounded Worshippers who were crying out for help and as the characters stood in the corridor they asked Lost to try and get the Worshippers out of the cells. Lost failed a dice roll, resulting in the cells liquidising the Worshippers and sucking them deep into the engines - turns out thats how the Purple is powered!

They tried to fly south but as Lost was unwilling to stop to harvest more lifeforms they ended up touching down on the coastline.

Beep beep booooweeep!

The hex called for an encounter with some robots defending something called the "Ultra-Net" which can [ultraviolet clearance required] so naturally the gang wanted to steal it, especially when it turned out to be totally adorable. After they broke into the hub, Ultra-Net beep-beep-boooweeped at the characters, happy to see fresh faces. Several attempts later and they managed to free Ultra-Net from its casing (nearly killing it twice) and he now resides on Lost's back, beeping away happily and occasionally making ice-cream.

Body Swap

During a conversation discussing a gladiator style night event, Karys got offended by the barman's sexual advances on Buxom and offered herself up instead. As soon as she got him alone in his squalid bedroom she knocked him out with Sleep. She then decided to see if the alien presence that controlled her character wanted to have fun with the man, but a failed roll resulted in her transporting her consciousness into the man.
When she (as the man who was known as Jeff) came back to the bar, Buxom got really upset when she saw Jeff carrying the prone naked form of Karys over his shoulder. After some convincing, both Jeff and Buxom went back to the bedroom with Karys and took part in some body hopping - the end result is the essence of Karys is now in Buxom, with the fate of Jeff and Buxom uncertain.

Thoughts

I got caught on the hop with this one due to some unexpected twists, but very amusing ones and I think I recovered fairly well! We've got 5 more sessions to go so its going to be interesting to see what the hell happens to the Purple-Haunted Islands!
For those of you on the fence post regarding buying/checking out The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence, please feel free to comment as I'm happy to answer any questions! Also happy to hear any thoughts regarding writing up highlights as opposed to entire session dumps.
